Crafting Connections: The Artistry of Bhu Ceramics with Nausheen Bari

Discovering the Art of Pottery

Nausheen Bari’s journey into pottery began in 2009 in the bustling city of Mumbai, where a weekly clay class ignited a passion that would shape her life's path. "That first experience with clay was transformative," she recalls. "It sparked a fascination that led me to pursue pottery more seriously."

The Draw of Auroville

Auroville, with its serene and creatively vibrant environment, became a pivotal chapter in Nausheen's journey. Her time at Mandala Pottery was transformative, providing her with invaluable practical experience and a deepened connection to the medium. "The nurturing and inspiring environment of Auroville played a significant role in my decision to establish my own studio, Bhu Ceramics," Nausheen explains.

Techniques and Materials

In her studio, Nausheen primarily uses stoneware clay, firing her creations to cone 10 in a meticulously crafted gas-fired kiln. Her techniques include both handbuilding and wheel throwing, employing a Japanese-style kick wheel and an electric wheel. This blend of traditional methods and contemporary tools allows her to maintain a dialogue between tradition and innovation.

Themes of Existence

A recurring theme in Nausheen's work is the exploration of existence and the intrinsic connection between creator and creation, embodied by the name 'Bhu,' which means 'to be' in Sanskrit. This philosophical approach is reflected in the form and function of her pieces, each one a celebration of life in its purest form.

Embracing Challenges

Being a potter in Auroville comes with its challenges, from maintaining material quality to managing studio operations. Nausheen overcomes these hurdles with a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability, bolstered by the collaborative spirit of the Auroville community. "The challenges are part of the journey," she says. "They help me grow and evolve as an artist."

Sustainable Practices

Sustainability is a core value in Nausheen's practice. She emphasizes mindful material use, energy-efficient firing techniques, and creating durable, functional pieces that promote a sustainable lifestyle. "Sustainability is not just a practice; it's a philosophy that guides my work," she asserts.
