As an architect turned potter, Tosha Parmar brings a unique perspective to her work. Born and raised in Ahmedabad, a city rich in culture and history in Gujarat, India, she was profoundly influenced by the multidisciplinary environment at the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT). This institution ingrained in her the ability to see architecture in every facet of life, a perspective that now deeply informs her pottery.

Architectural Roots and Ceramic Innovations

"My architectural background is the backbone of my approach to ceramics," Tosha reflects. "It allows me to innovate and reimagine traditional techniques." She enjoys experimenting with mixed materials and resolving joinery, merging the meticulousness of architecture with the fluidity of ceramic art. This unique blend of skills has guided her fascination with Nerikomi, an ancient Japanese technique of combining colored clays. Through this method, Tosha explores new creative paths, crafting pieces with unique textures and colors.

Auroville, an international township in Tamil Nadu, India, continuously inspires her with its breathtaking beauty and serene environment. Here, Tosha blends different types of clay and pushes the boundaries of traditional Nerikomi techniques to create artworks that reflect her unique vision. "The challenges of working with diverse clay shrinkages and the unpredictability of soda and wood firings add a thrilling dimension to my craft," she says.

The Art of Soda Firing at Mandala Pottery

Over the past five years at Mandala Pottery, Tosha has honed her skills, particularly in soda firing, an unconventional wood firing technique that has truly brought her work to life. In this process, soda is sprayed into the kiln during firing, creating a distinctive, crystalline surface on each piece. "The result is an otherworldly aesthetic that has become a hallmark of my art," Tosha explains, characterized by its unique textures and striking visual appeal.
